SEO Audit Checklist: Is Your Website Missing Key Elements?

Bestie, having a website isn’t enough. If people can’t find it, what’s the point?

You didn’t spend all that time (and maybe even some occasional rage-quitting moments, holla at ya girl so I know I’m not alone) building your site just for it to sit in a corner of the internet like an unclaimed cart at Target.

So let’s get into it:

This SEO audit checklist is here to make sure your site actually gets seen on Google.

Check out this quick checklist to make sure your site isn’t out here playing hide and seek with your potential clients.

But first, a reality check…

SEO sounds intimidating, I’ll be the millionth person to admit it.

But it’s really just making sure Miss Google (and real people) understand what your website is about.

It’s like setting up a dating profile, if you don’t add any details, how’s your dream client (or Google) supposed to know you exist, let alone decide you’re the perfect match? 🥲

And no, you don’t have to be an SEO expert to get this right. You just need to make sure you’re covering the basics.

The Essential SEO Checklist for Your Website

Your H1 Header Is Doing Its Job

Your H1 is the main heading of each page. It tells Google (and visitors) what the page is about.

What to check:

  • Is your H1 clear and descriptive?
  • Does it include relevant keywords? (Ex: “Branding & Web Design for Service Providers” vs. “Welcome to My Website”)
  • Is there only one H1 per page? (Multiple H1s confuse Google)

If your H1 is something like “Hi, I’m [Name] and I love helping people!”, it’s time to switch it up!

Your Page Titles & Meta Descriptions Are Doing Work

These are what show up when someone Googles your site. If you don’t set them up, Google just grabs whatever text it feels like (and it might not be the part your dream clients care about)

What to check:

  • Does each page have a unique title tag? (Ex: “Website Templates for Coaches & Creatives | Guapa Studios”)
  • Are your meta descriptions actually enticing? (Think of them as little previews—people should want to click)
  • Did you avoid keyword stuffing? (We’re not out here sounding like robots)

You’re Using Alt Text for Images

Alt text = short descriptions for your images. This helps Google understand what’s in them and makes your site more accessible.

What to check:

  • Does every image have descriptive alt text? (Ex: “Laptop on desk with Showit website template open” vs “screenshot1.jpg”)
  • Are you using relevant keywords naturally? (No keyword stuffing, babe)

Internal Links Are Connecting the Dots

Google loves when your pages link to each other. It helps with ranking and keeps visitors on your site longer.

What to check:

  • Are you linking to related content on your own site? (Ex: If you have a blog post about branding, like this one, link to your services page—see what I did there?)
  • Do the links actually make sense? (No random, forced links)
  • Are your anchor texts descriptive? (Ex: “Check out my website templates” vs. “Click here.”)

Your Website Isn’t Crawling at Gary the Snail’s Pace

A slow website = high bounce rates. People (and Google) hate waiting for pages to load.

What to check:

  • Have you compressed your images? (Big image files = slow load times)
  • Are you using a good hosting provider? (Cheap hosting can slow you down)
  • Have you removed unnecessary plugins? (More plugins = more lag)

Your Website Actually Looks Good on Mobile

More than half of web traffic is mobile—so if your site isn’t mobile-friendly, you’re losing people.

What to check:

  • Is your site fully responsive? (No weird cut-off text or broken layouts)
  • Are your buttons & links easy to tap? (No one should have to zoom in just to click)
  • Is your text readable on a small screen? (Tiny font = instant exit)

Soooooo…How’d You Do?

If you’re missing some of these SEO essentials, DO NOT PANIC, but don’t ignore them either.

Unlike you, your website should be working for you 24/7, not just sitting there looking cute.

And if you don’t know where to start?

I gotchu.
