11 Business Habits We’re Leaving Behind in 2024 (And What We’re Doing Instead)

Alright, let’s get real for a hot second.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Oh great, another preachy business advice post” — I see you, and I promise this isn’t going to be your typical snooze-fest of productivity porn.

We’re diving deep into those toxic business habits that are holding us back harder than slow internet during a crucial Zoom call. And trust me, I’m not just preaching — I’m right here in the trenches with you.

The Real Talk: Why We’re Dumping These Habits

Running a business isn’t about becoming some robot-like superhero. It’s about working smarter, not grinding yourself into dust. And as a recovering workaholic who was raised to believe rest is for the weak? I’m still learning (and unlearning) these lessons.

1. The “I Do Everything Myself” Trap 🐺

Put a finger down if you’ve ever said, “If I want it done right, I’ll do it myself.”

☝🏽

Been there, done that, got the burnout t-shirt to go with it. Trying to do everything solo is like attempting to cut your own bangs — chaotic and likely to end in tears.

What to do instead:

  • Outsource ONE thing. Just uno.
  • Automate those repetitive tasks like they’re going out of style (hello Zapier!)
  • Create templates that save you time (and sanity)

2. “Rest is for Losers” Mindset 💤

Newsflash: Burnout isn’t a personality trait, mamacita.

Your body is not a machine, and constant grinding is about as sustainable as my first attempt at meal prep. Rest isn’t laziness — it’s strategic self-care.

What to do instead:

  • Schedule legit “no work” days
  • Use those email auto-responders like your personal bodyguards
  • Remember: Taking breaks doesn’t make you weak, it makes you smart

3. The “Always Available” Bullshit 📱

Just because you can respond to emails at midnight doesn’t mean you should.

Boundaries aren’t just cute Instagram quotes — they’re survival tactics for business owners who want to keep their shit together.

What to do instead:

  • Set clear work hours (at least starting with your clients)
  • Create auto-responses that scream “I respect my time”
  • Learn to say “not right now” without the guilt trip (On the top of my to-do list of things to work on)

4. The Comparison Trap 🔍

Scrolling through Instagram and feeling like everyone’s killing it while you’re barely hanging on? Let’s cut that noise.

Social media is the highlight reel, and honey, no one’s posting their 3 AM panic attacks or failed launches (kudos to them if they are and drop me their @)

What to do instead:

  • Unfollow accounts that make you feel like trash (if it’s your annoying relatives that you can’t unfollow, mute em bb, I give you permission)
  • Celebrate your own fucking wins (ALL. OF. THEM.)
  • Remember: Your journey is not a race and every milestone counts!

5. Undervaluing Your Magical Skills 💸

If I see one more service provider charging less than minimum wage, I’m going to lose my shit!

Your skills are a gift, not a charity. Period.

What to do instead:

  • Raise those prices like your worth depends on it (because it does)
  • Practice saying your rates with confidence
  • Stop apologizing for being fucking awesome

6. The “Lone Wolf” Entrepreneurship Myth 🐺

Trying to figure everything out alone is like trying to do a TikTok dance without watching the tutorial — messy and potentially embarrassing.

What to do instead:

  • Join business communities (online or local)
  • Find your business besties
  • Share resources, not just memes. We don’t gatekeep!

7. Ignoring Your Mental Health 🧠

Your business brain is connected to your entire being. Neglecting your mental health is like trying to run a Ferrari on empty.

What to do instead:

  • Therapy is not a luxury, it’s maintenance
  • Create real self-care routines, start small if you have to
  • Learn to recognize your burnout signs

8. Financial Chaos 💰

Treating your business finances like a mystery novel? Nah, we’re adulting now.

What to do instead:

  • Track your pennies! Where does all your money go?!
  • Use accounting software or go old school on paper (whatever floats your boat)
  • Learn basic financial literacy

If you’re really looking for some help on managing your finances whether you’re trying to bury yourself out of debt or want to learn how to manage those big bucks you’re bringing in, the homegirl Gaby Rincon is the best is the west!!

9. Content Consistency Pressure 📣

You don’t need to be everywhere, all the time. Quality over quantity, always.

What to do instead:

  • Choose 1-2 platforms you actually enjoy
  • Plan and create batched content (gotta practice what I preach with this one)
  • Give yourself grace on low-energy days

10. Imposter Syndrome Spiral 🌪️

That voice saying you’re not good enough? It’s a liar and a fucking snake!

What to do instead:

  • Collect client wins and testimonials
  • Create a “proof” folder for tough days
  • Remind yourself: You’re learning, not failing. You are NOT expected to know everything, nobody is. Get comfortable with what you don’t know. It’s better to feel confident with what you don’t know than pretend to. (Shout out to Issa Rae for those words of wisdom!)

11. Zero Systems and Processes 📋

Winging it might feel exciting, but it’s not a business strategy — it’s chaos with a cute outfit.

What to do instead:

  • Document your workflows
  • Create templates for EVERYTHING
  • Invest in project management tools (I’m a slut for Trello!)

The Bottom Line: We’re in This Together

Look, I’m a web design girlie who’s still figuring this all out. Some days I’m killing it, some days I’m just trying to survive. And that’s completely okay.

As a Latina web designer who creates Showit templates and custom websites, I know the hustle is real. But I also know we can’t pour from an empty cup.

Bonus for my service provider girlies:

This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about progress. Some days you’ll crush your goals, some days you’ll be cuddled up with your pennifer playing ad filled games on your phone wondering what the fuck is happening — and both are valid.

Your business is a living, breathing thing. Treat it (and yourself) with mad respect, humor, and a whole lotta grace.

Cheers to leveling up in 2025, guapas 🫶🏽
